Drolatic Dream Catcher - 3D Model

Inspired by an illustration in the book “The Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel (1565)", I created this frog-like character, bringing to life the creativity of the book’s author.

I wanted to not only create the character itself, but also surround it in the whimsicle environment I imagined they would reside in.

For this 3D model I used the modeling software Blender.

  • I first sculpted out the general character I wanted, adding a base lily pad for him to sit on.
  • After I was happy with the general look of the sculpt, I moved on to general material designs. This helped with creating a full base for my project to then tweak and change what I was not satisfied with.
  • From there, I built assets for the entire scene, which included cattails, lily pads, flowers, rocks, and general greenery.
  • Finally, I was able to play with the lighting to achieve the morning sunlight atmosphere I was looking for, along with some simple camera/perspective work.

References and Inspiration

As mentioned above, I was inspired by the book “The Drolatic Dreams of Pantegruel”, or, as it was writen in French, “Les Songes Drolatiques De Pantagruel”.

I found looking through the book was incredibly inspiring due to the amazing creativity of the author in 1565. The imagry, being unique for its time, influenced me to bring them life using modern artistic tools.

Pictured on the left is the illustration I used as a reference; on the right is the book it is from.
